Harrow CT takes a cruise in Little Venice

On Tuesday 29th, Harrow CT took members of its Wayfarer outings club to Little Venice for a cruise on the London Waterbus canal boat to Camden Lock. This picturesque pool of water is where the Grand Union and Regent’s Canals meet – just North of Paddington.

We set off from the Harrow CT bus stop on College Road at 9.30am to make our way to Little Venice. It took 45 minutes to get there, when we arrived, we went to the Waterside Café (a converted narrowboat). The departure time for the waterbus to Camden Lock was 11.00am so we had time to sit down and have a drink. One of the people on this outing was saying how these trips are good for older people as they can’t get out to these places by themselves and that this is a good way of making friends.

The boat trip was an hour, on the way there were many delightful sights as we passed London Zoo. We saw lots of boats on the away as well as Gondolas which had violinists playing on the end; this gave it a real ‘Little Venice’ feel. We also saw some houses with beautiful architect, one of which had a life size figure of a cow on the balcony! - Which everyone found amusing.

When we reached the market, the smell of food filled the air. As we got off the boat it was very hectic with a variety of food stalls in sight, there was Caribbean, Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Italian, Mexican and more. It was a great experience with foods from all around the world. Everyone scattered off into the market excitedly to look around at all of the stalls which had different styles of clothing from burlesque to modern styles and different cultural clothing. There was also handcraft jewellery and some amazing art work and paintings. Whilst wondering around, a particular stall caught my eye; it had paintings of scenes in London such as Big Ben and Tower Bridge which had parts that lit up; I thought it was brilliant! Other stalls included vintage records, interestingly designed home ware and decorations, and vintage toys

Soon it was time to leave the market; the waterbus back to Little Venice was at 3.00pm. From the boat, we spotted cut outs of penguins by the zoo and also a cut out of Amy Winehouse. A group of people were talking about how their day went and how they enjoyed it and all the views of the canal. One person said that it was a good trip and that they had never been to Little Venice or Camden Lock before so it was a nice new experience for them

Before we knew it, we had reached Little Venice again where we saw the Harrow CT bus waiting across the canal. We headed back at 4.00pm, after a great day out, everyone showed their appreciation for Harrow CT’s outings service.
